December is known as the holiday season. Students are out of school, families and friends are getting together to celebrate the many different holidays occuring within the month and the city is decked out in holiday decor. In the US, the holiday season is filled with lots of fun things to do, whether you are a domestic or an international student. Here are some fun things to do during the holiday season:

Decorate a Christmas tree

This is an age-old classic during the holiday season. Christmas trees can be seen everywhere: inside malls on the corner of streets and inside people’s homes. There are many different kinds of trees, real and fake, that come in many different sizes, big and small. So even if you do not have a lot of room in your small dorm, you can probably fit a small desk sized tree. Some universities even have tree decorating ceremonies or you can find a friend that is putting up a tree and help them decorate.

See Christmas lights

There are many places to see Christmas lights and many of them are completely free. Some cities are roads or down down areas that are all decked out in Christmas lights. You can even ask advisors or local students, they may know of a great neighborhood that is always decorated. So take a drive, or a walk, through these beautifully lighted streets and enjoy yourself.

Attend an ice sculpture show

Have you ever seen an ice sculpture? These are absolutely beautiful. Solid ice sculpted to perfection. Some are very detailed, some are large and some are even colorful! If you live in some of the northern states, there are probably ice sculpture events and shows happening in local parks. If you are down south, search around for an indoor ice sculpture exhibit. Here in the Dallas area, we have a great one called The Ice that happens every year at the Gaylord Texan.

Go to a holiday party

There are lots of holiday parties going on during this part of the year: winter parties, Christmas parties, New Year’s Eve parties, and more. If you really want to get into the holiday season, attend an ugly Christmas sweater party. It is a very common party theme for a holiday or Christmas party.

See fireworks on New Years

Practically every big city in the US will be having fireworks shows during New Year’s Eve. Just search the internet or ask around for locations to see the fireworks displays near you. Just keep in mind that you will probably deal with a little traffic, so arrive early and don’t expect to be able to leave right after.

Watch the New Year’s Eve countdown

Watch a New Year’s Eve countdown, or several. The US has four different time zones, so you can potentially watch up to four different countdowns. One of the biggest countdowns, however, is the one at Times Square in New York.

These are just a few of the ways to can celebrate the holiday season. There are many more ways you can enjoy this season, such as taking a sleigh ride or building a snowman. If you don’t want to leave the house, you can even watch a marathon of all the greatest Christmas classics. The important thing to do is to have fun, relax and spend time with those you care about. Happy Holidays!
